COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Escondido Public Library will close its main building on April 26th for repairs and reopen at a temporary location inside North County Mall on Tuesday, May 27th for one year—using a $10 million grant to fix roof leaks, aged air conditioning, and worn interiors—while continuing to offer limited in-person and digital services.  Escondido Times-Advocate
  • The First Congregational Church of Escondido will host the 2nd annual Jack Owens Memorial Golf Tournament on May 5 at Welk Resort Fountains Golf Course with breakfast starting at 7:30 a.m., registration at 8:30 a.m., and a scramble shotgun start following lunch. Funds raised will support church programs that honor Jack Owens’s legacy in business, church work, and community service — a tribute to his lasting impact in Escondido.  Escondido Times-Advocate

BUSINESS NEWS

  • The City of Escondido announced that the Grand Avenue renovation is nearly finished—crews are planting landscaping and installing decorative fencing from Kalmia to Broadway while concrete and asphalt work will be completed by the end of next week with roads opening by the end of April. Local business owners have reported lost revenue and customer access issues since construction began last fall—some seeing significant drops in patronage and staffing.  Escondido Times-Advocate

CULTURE NEWS

  • A ‘Star’ sculpture—a 30-foot metal structure with multi-level floors—was installed last week on the California Center for the Arts lawn as part of Art, Culture and Creativity month. The work by Colin Jemmott and MJ Brovold is not climbable at this location and will be removed on May 17.  Escondido Times-Advocate
  • The relocated Grand Comedy and Pizzeria has been open for more than a month in the old California Pizza Kitchen space at Mershops North County Mall, offering comedy shows, a sports bar and pizza while drawing new visitors — owner Adam Wasserman said Mayor Dane White attended the grand opening and future acts will bring more entertainment to the mall.  Escondido Times-Advocate
  • Escondido launched the Arts, Culture & Creativity Month on April 1st at Heritage Park during the weekly Farmer’s Market as local artists, business leaders and nonprofit groups joined the event and Mayor Dane White issued a proclamation naming April the month for the arts. Organizers planned future events including a staged reading on April 19 and a Latin music performance at 7 p.m. on April 25 — promising more creative experiences for the community.  Escondido Times-Advocate

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Escondido Creek Conservancy received a $2,000 donation from San Marcos Community Foundation — a 38-year-old grant-making group — to support two exhibits at the Elfin Forest Reserve Interpretive Center and three Conservation Conversations events that include an 18th annual photo contest and an educational display on local habitats.  Escondido Times-Advocate

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Monday, April 14 at 10:08 a.m., a 5.2 earthquake hit near Julian and was felt around Escondido, prompting elephants at the Safari Park to form an alert circle to protect their young. City officials later assessed facilities and reported no major damage except for one call about fallen rocks on Lake Wohlford Road while schools remained on spring break.  Escondido Times-Advocate

  • Team Parker 4 Life raised over $3M to boost childhood cancer research and ease financial burdens for more than 60 families— it was founded by Crystal Shaw after her son fought a rare cancer.  CBS8
