COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Salvation Army Captain Amber Ohl informed the Escondido Advisory Board that the corps provides 22.4% of the county’s Salvation Army services—from food boxes to hot meals—second only to the El Cajon site. The group operates with three employees, a part-timer, and many volunteers.  Escondido Times-Advocate

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Wildlife Removal Services opened a new office in Escondido to provide humane wildlife control to residents and businesses in North County. Owner Eric Voigt said the family-run business (founded in 2008) will offer removal as well as exclusion and prevention services.  Escondido Times-Advocate
  • Brixton Capital bought Escondido Gateway, an 89,252 sqft center at 810-840 W. Valley Pkwy, for $28 million; the 96.8% occupied property will lease two vacant suites. Ikea will open its new plan and order pick up point at 1210 Auto Park Way on Wednesday, May 27 at 9:30 a.m.  Escondido Times-Advocate

CULTURE NEWS

  • The 30th annual Escondido Street Festival runs Sunday, May 17, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Grand Avenue between Escondido Blvd. and Ivy; the event features live music by Wildcat Guitars, Art in the Garden at Heritage Garden, and a Beer and Wine Garden.  Escondido Times-Advocate
  • Joanne Sullivan earned the Gold Medal for her watercolor 'Memories of the Village' at the Shape, Form & Line exhibition — the show opened Saturday at the Grand Avenue Esco Arts Gallery and runs through Friday May 30 with free admission.  Escondido Times-Advocate
  • After a lively musical bingo held May 8, CCAE is expanding its Hidden City Sounds series with a free concert featuring Sara Petite on Friday, June 12 at 7 p.m. Musical bingo starts at 6:30 p.m. with a free line dancing class (taught by Wild Moon).  Escondido Times-Advocate
  • City Ballet performed on May 3 at the California Center for the Arts, Escondido, featuring George Balanchine's 'Who Cares' and 'The Firebird.' The performance showcased technical skill, creative choreography (with moments of improvisation) and live music.  Escondido Times-Advocate
  • Jose Chamu works on his 1999 Infinity along Escondido Boulevard to create a custom stance using stretched tires and modified suspension for local car shows. He explained the setup draws inspiration from Japanese drifting culture and is popular at events like Cars and Coffee.  Escondido Times-Advocate

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Escondido Police Department is reminding drivers to look twice for motorcycles as warmer weather increases rider numbers this May (Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month). They advise checking mirrors, keeping a safe distance, and scanning blind spots to help reduce crashes.  Escondido Times-Advocate
  • Local DACA recipients are facing longer renewal delays that put work authorization at risk as processing has stretched from weeks to several months; one community member (Em) applied in February and remains uncertain while discussing options with employers.  NBC San Diego

SPORTS NEWS

  • Last Friday at Valley Center High, Escondido and San Pasqual High track teams competed at the Valley League Finals. Escondido’s Sonya Nichols won the 800, 1600, and 3200 races while sophomore Sophia Swift placed second in four events — showcasing standout local talent.  Escondido Times-Advocate
