COMMUNITY NEWS

  • San Diego Humane Society announced Wednesday it will expand weekend adoption hours this summer to help rehome more animals at the El Cajon, Escondido, Oceanside and San Diego campuses. The extended hours begin on Saturday and run every weekend until Oct. 19 — the move comes as the organization faces a $1 million funding gap amid city budget cuts.  NBC San Diego

CRIME NEWS

  • Robert Young, founder of the pH Miracle Diet, was sentenced on May 28th to nearly six years in prison for practicing medicine without a license, elder abuse, and theft from an elderly patient—he was convicted on four felony counts by a jury in San Diego County. Young has a long history of similar fraud charges, and this sentence marks his first substantial prison term despite previous convictions.  CBS8

EDUCATION NEWS

  • At the May 21 City Council meeting in Escondido, 12 fourth graders were honored for their 'Love Water, Save Water' posters as part of the City’s Water Science Education Program. The three winners earned first, second, and third place and will have their art featured in the 2026 North County Agency Water Calendar + nearly 100 entries were reviewed to choose the winners based on creativity and water conservation themes.  City of Escondido

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Escondido is on track for a balanced budget and nearly $30 million in new investments for police, fire, parks and other services thanks to Measure I, a one-cent sales tax increase approved by voters that took effect on April 1. The city expects to collect about $38.5 million over the next year to help avoid major cuts to essential programs.  The Coast News

  • Guard Miles Byrd said on Instagram on Wednesday that he will return for his redshirt junior season with the Aztecs, making his decision less than seven hours before the draft removal deadline. He improved his averages in points, minutes and rebounds last season — strengthening head coach Brian Dutcher’s roster.  NBC San Diego
