  • Workers at Albertsons, Pavilions, Ralphs and Vons voted to authorize strike action after four months of stalled contract talks and will begin preparing for a possible strike Thursday unless companies meet the union's demands for living wages, affordable healthcare benefits and better staffing levels—negotiations are set to resume on June 25 after their contract expired on March 2.  NBC San Diego

  • Vista Unified School District is using USDA funding to offer free nutritious breakfast, lunch and snacks to children 18 and younger at five summer meal sites, including the Boys — Girls Club of Vista where 5- and 6-year-olds lined up on June 12.   • Scientists at Scripps Institution of Oceanography have collected ocean sounds for 15 years—using underwater microphones placed along the seafloor in the Southern California Bight—to study whale calls and link shifts in the marine ecosystem to climate events and changes in ship traffic since the 2008 recession.  NBC San Diego
