- ➤ Edgar Herrera Pardo, a Mexican cartel enforcer, pleaded guilty to drug trafficking charges and ordering the killing of a Tijuana police officer and was sentenced on Friday to 28 years in federal prison — he will be deported once his sentence is complete. NBC San Diego

- ➤ After a hard tag to the head in Saturday’s game, the Padres placed All-Star outfielder Jackson Merrill on the 7-day concussion IL ahead of their season finale against the Diamondbacks; the team replaced him with Trenton Brooks—an alum of Granite Hills High—and won 8-2 before facing the Dodgers Monday night. - ➤ J.J. Spaun, a San Diego State University graduate, won the U.S. Open at Oakmont on Sunday by finishing two shots ahead of Robert MacIntyre—he became the only player to finish under par at 1-under 279 after a long rain delay challenged his play. CBS8
