Good morning, Escondido. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 4th of July.

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City Council approved a balanced budget on June 18 with a surplus of about $7.1 million boosted by voter-approved Measure I that generated extra sales tax revenue (the measure is expected to fund various infrastructure and staffing improvements). Officials noted that although the current funds allow important investments, they warned of long-term fiscal challenges that could lead to a future structural deficit.  The Coast News
  • Escondido City Council narrowly approved plans to demolish a 1950s building at 339 S. Escondido Blvd and build a five-story, 35-unit apartment complex made up of studios and one-bedroom apartments. The project includes four low-income units and only 16 parking spaces—using the state’s density bonus law to meet affordable housing requirements for displaced tenants.  The Coast News
  • San Diego County officials warned that fireworks are illegal today because they risk serious injuries and property damage — fines start at $50 and can increase if major violations occur. Residents are advised to enjoy professional fireworks displays for a safe celebration.  NBC San Diego
