  • Escondido Police Department invites residents to join National Night Out at Grape Day Park on Tuesday, August 5 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. The free event will feature a bike rodeo, safety demonstrations, community resources, contests and entertainment — a joint effort with the city and local public safety teams.  City of Escondido

  • Two inmates serving life sentences for high-profile crimes in San Diego County were denied parole on Wednesday—Rustad for three years and Asora for five years—after new parole law changes affected their eligibility.  CBS8

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On July 31, Palomar College EMT students attended hands-on pediatric emergency training at Rady Children's Hospital to learn IV insertion, airway management, neonatal resuscitation and intraosseous drill techniques using simulated eggs—methods designed to help treat very sick infants. The course, part of a 10-year partnership with the hospital and other local agencies, has helped train more than 2,000 EMT and paramedic students in pediatric emergency care.  NBC San Diego

  • On July 31, the Athletics traded star closer Mason Miller and starting pitcher J.P. Sears to the Padres for four players including shortstop prospect Leodalis De Vries and pitchers Braden Nett, Henry Báez and Eduarniel Nuñez — ESPN reported.  NBC San Diego
