EDUCATION NEWS

  • North Island Credit Union launched its annual book drive on August 4 to collect new books for Title 1 school children and is accepting donations at its San Diego County branches, including one at 1230 Auto Park Way in Escondido, through August 31 — a key part of its Storytime literacy campaign with ABC 10News.  The Vista Press

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A trio of black bear cubs was rescued from Calaveras County and taken to Ramona Wildlife Center, where vets evaluated them last month. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • CAL FIRE showed the damage a pink retardant drop can cause — its force can destroy a car and endanger people — and urged locals to steer clear of sprayed areas. The agency also announced a $12 million upgrade to its Ramona Air Attack Base that will rebuild the tarmac for the C-130H, with work set to begin on Aug. 12 and last for eight months to a year.  CBS8

HEALTH NEWS

  • San Diego County health officials reminded residents to prevent Lyme disease after singer Justin Timberlake announced his infection, even though the disease remains rare locally. They advised using EPA-registered repellents, staying in the middle of trails, and checking for ticks in grassy and wooded areas like Mission Trails, Mount Laguna, and Balboa Park — ticks do not jump and should be removed with tweezers promptly to lower the risk of illness.  CBS8
