- ➤ A 72,000-acre wildfire in San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara Counties sent smoke to San Diego County, and a smoke haze was visible on Tuesday. The Gifford Fire started last Friday along Highway 166, has grown to 72,400 acres with 7% containment, and forecasters expect smoky conditions for a couple more days. NBC San Diego

- ➤ San Diego County has opened its annual Cool Zones program to provide over 80 free, air-conditioned shelters for residents to beat the heat through Oct. 31—these sites include libraries, community and senior centers and target groups at risk from extreme heat. CBS8
- ➤ Escondido Neighbors for Solutions presented a draft resolution last month to affirm a 'Welcoming City' status that protects all residents (regardless of immigration status) amid rising federal enforcement, and Councilmember Christian Garcia with Mayor Dane White later backed a letter urging congressional reform to set clear local policies (a proposal expected to be voted on soon).
