- ➤ Animal shelters rescued dozens of dogs from a fake rescue in Ensenada, Mexico after Mexican authorities raided the facility on July 7 and found nearly 300 dogs in unsanitary conditions+rescuers say about 50 dogs remain at risk of euthanasia if new foster homes are not found. NBC San Diego

- ➤ A federal judge on Aug. 1 ruled that key surveillance footage from a 2022 jail death was erased despite the county’s duty to preserve it—families of other in-custody victims demanded accountability amid concerns that vital evidence has been lost. NBC San Diego
- ➤ A judge dismissed a sexual harassment lawsuit filed by former PR specialist Grecia Figueroa against ex-county supervisor Nathan Fletcher—citing her failure to turn over and destruction of key evidence—which canceled the trial set for next month. Fletcher’s attorney said he will pursue a defamation countersuit. NBC San Diego
