  • More than a dozen protesters gathered on Saturday in Escondido to rally against Palantir Technologies over concerns that its data collection for federal agencies—especially a recent $30 million ICE contract—may threaten personal privacy. Organizer Gregg Oliver said his group will continue raising issues until clear explanations on data use are provided.  NBC San Diego

CRIME NEWS

  • Two men, including foster son Cedric Van Ferdinand (also known as Charles Brown) and notary Raymond Joseph Alto, are facing seventeen felony counts of fraud, forgery, and grand theft linked to the late foster mother Nadine Jett after her daughters found forged documents on her property and a preliminary hearing is set for Sept. 5 at the San Diego Superior Court.  NBC San Diego

  • Padres pitcher Nestor Cortes threw 6.0 shutout innings and led his team to a 5-1 win over the Dodgers that put them alone in first place in the N.L. West, keeping a perfect game into the 6th inning until a single ended his streak. He earned his first win with the Padres after coming from the Brewers—boosting their position ahead of the final game of their series at Petco Park.  NBC San Diego
  • San Diego FC clinched its first MLS playoff spot after a 0-0 draw with Portland on Saturday night at Snapdragon Stadium—making them the first team in the league to secure a postseason position while holding the top spot in the Western Conference. The team will face LAFC on Sunday, August 31.  NBC San Diego
