  • Spencer Smith, a long-time Escondido resident, wrote in a letter that Lake Hodges’ dam should have its level raised from 280ft to 293ft until a new dam is built—this change aims to reduce fire risk and support emergency water storage and hydroelectric benefits for the community.  Escondido Times-Advocate

CRIME NEWS

  • Ramona Sheriff's substation and Escondido Police are handling a SWAT standoff near the 1500 block of Royal Vista Drive—causing Hanson Elementary School to be evacuated and students to be relocated to Ramona Community Montessori School on the 1000 block of Ramona Street.  CBS8

CULTURE NEWS

  • Escondido adopted its second annual public art plan in May 2024 and has already installed murals like Bellas Rosas while celebrating student work on The Surfing Shrimp — the new plan sets the stage for projects such as the Grand Avenue Roundabout Art Project and art along the Escondido Creek Trail. Mayor Dane White and council members praised the efforts — future projects aim to highlight Escondido’s growing creative spirit.  The Coast News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On September 3, the City launched Your Escondido—an online engagement platform that makes it easier for residents to share feedback on City projects and ideas. It offers surveys and interactive maps to help guide future community improvements.  City of Escondido
  • California lawmakers passed a bill on Tuesday that requires schools to notify parents and teachers when immigration enforcement shows up on campus, and colleges must send alerts to students, faculty and staff. It now goes to Gov. Gavin Newsom—who has until Oct. 12 to sign it—before the law takes effect until 2031.  NBC San Diego

HEALTH NEWS

  • San Diego County officials reported six local cases of Chagas disease so far this year, but many more people may be undiagnosed—experts stress the importance of screening, especially for those with risk factors like previous exposure to the triatomine bug. Early testing can help prevent serious heart and intestinal damage later.  NBC San Diego

  • Padres reliever Jason Adam injured his left leg on Monday when he tore a quadriceps tendon and was carted off the field—he will need an MRI and may miss the rest of the season. His team now chases the Dodgers for first place in the NL West and must adjust their bullpen without him.  CBS8
