CRIME NEWS

  • A preliminary hearing was held at San Diego Superior Court on September 5 and September 9 for defendants Cedric Von Ferdinand and Raymond Alto, who pleaded not guilty to 41 felony counts including fraud, identity theft, and grand theft related to the alleged exploitation of Nadine Jett’s estate — prosecutors presented evidence of forged documents and unauthorized transfers that resulted in alleged losses exceeding $500,000.  Escondido Times-Advocate

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On Sunday, Sept. 9, captain Erica Sackrison led a local tour group that spotted two juvenile male sperm whales 20 miles off the San Diego coast—an unusual sight near shore that impressed a Scripps scientist. The encounter was captured using a non-invasive drone and set off excitement among both boaters and researchers.  NBC San Diego

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The San Diego County Board of Supervisors voted Tuesday to include unaccompanied immigrant minors in its $5 million Immigrant Legal Defense Program—$300,000 of that funding will be used to hire an extra staff member to assist the children in immigration court. Board chair Terra Lawson-Remer introduced the measure after federal budget cuts threatened legal aid for minors.  NBC San Diego
