COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Today, county agencies and local volunteers hosted a recovery event for fire victims of the Coches fire that injured two people and destroyed six homes in Lakeside. Fire victim Sharon Martin said she received help with temporary housing, permits, vital document printing and other recovery services.  NBC San Diego
  • Elite military special troops swam in San Diego Bay on Saturday to raise funds for programs that help veterans move to civilian life. The 108 participants—Navy SEALs, Green Berets, Delta Force, and Marine Raiders—ran along Coronado Beach and swam three miles to the U.S.S. Midway while each committed to raising at least $1,500, and donations are still accepted.  NBC San Diego

  • In Escondido, the Fiestas Patrias Festival at Grape Day Park begins today with a church Mass at noon and will continue with traditional dancing, mariachis, food vendors, and an official El Grito at 9:30 p.m.—local organizers mark Mexico’s 215th Independence Day with festive activities.  NBC San Diego
  • San Diego County is celebrating Mexico’s 215th Independence Day with music, dancing and crafts across the region. In Escondido, residents are joining an all-day festival at Grape Day Park — the event starts with a church mass at noon and ends with the official El Grito at 9:30 p.m.  CBS8
