Good morning, Escondido. Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 1st of October.
ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ On Monday afternoon, a small plane made an emergency landing on I-15 in San Diego after its pilot reported engine failure. Aviation expert Robert Katz said the pilot handled the situation well and noted that similar incidents have recently occurred in the region. CBS8
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ San Diego County Supervisors voted 3-2 Tuesday to form an ad hoc subcommittee that will work with fiscal experts to protect essential services from funding cuts and assess short- and long-term risks. Led by Terra Lawson-Remer and Monica Montgomery Steppe, the group will begin meeting immediately and report its findings later this fall—its creation comes as local leaders brace for federal budget cuts. NBC San Diego
- ➤ The San Diego County Board of Supervisors voted Tuesday by a 4—1 margin to expand the oversight powers of the Citizens Law Enforcement Review Board so it can investigate jail deaths by requiring cases to close within one year and prioritize in-custody deaths—Supervisor Monica Montgomery Steppe said the change is a bold step to help prevent future tragedies. One supervisor opposed the change, arguing that expanding the board’s role into correctional health care would duplicate work already done by medical boards while some residents at the public comment period called for stronger oversight. NBC San Diego
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ The Padres have finalized their roster of 26 players for the Wild Card series against the Cubs, which will start on Tuesday at Wrigley Field in Chicago. The team’s 14 position players and 12 pitchers include three catchers—Freddy Fermin will handle most catching duties as Elias Diaz recovers from an oblique injury—while manager Mike Shildt has chosen his best bats over matchup plays. NBC San Diego
- ➤ After nearly 30 years, the Escondido Sports Center Skatepark in Kit Carson Park permanently closed when a city safety audit found the foundational substructure was beyond repair — rebuilding was not cost-effective given low attendance and nearby free skate options. City staff are now reviewing other uses for the site. The Coast News
- ➤ The Padres missed early scoring chances in Game 1 while the Cubs hit two big homers that turned the game around. Nick Pivetta pitched well at the start but the Padres’ offense went quiet in the later innings—raising pressure on Dylan Cease for Wednesday’s matchup. NBC San Diego
