  • Serving Seniors provides 1.5 million meals annually to over 13,000 low-income and homeless older adults in San Diego County and offers wraparound services to keep seniors safe. Its new President—Melinda Forstey—has stressed the need for more prevention efforts and will host a fundraising gala on Saturday, October 11 at Rancho Bernardo Inn to support these services.  CBS8

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Firefighters were called Tuesday afternoon after smoke and flames were spotted near De Luz on Sandia Creek Road—by 7 p.m., the brush fire had burned 24 acres with 10% containment and evacuation warnings were lifted shortly after 6 p.m.  NBC San Diego

  • A golden supermoon lit the sky Monday and residents who missed it in Escondido can look forward to the Beaver Moon lighting the night on Nov. 5—another supermoon will brighten the sky on Dec. 4. The moon appears bigger and brighter when it is closer to Earth due to its oval orbit.  NBC San Diego

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The San Diego Zoo’s pandas Xin Bao and Yun Chuan eat up to 75 pounds of bamboo each day from a dedicated bamboo field at the adjacent Safari Park—zoo staff harvest 5-foot sections of 12 different species to support both their diet and conservation efforts.  CBS8

  • Mail-in ballots for Prop 50 were sent to eligible voters with less than one month until the special election, NBC 7 reported — local officials urged residents to review and return ballots promptly — as deadlines approach.  NBC San Diego
