Female veterans and their children began moving into a new safe housing center in Escondido launched in August by local non-profit Wounded Warrior Homes to help them transition to civilian life.

The center offers free transitional housing with counseling, education and job support, and first resident Emely, a Navy veteran, moved in with plans to reopen applications in January.

Meals on Wheels of San Diego County visited 93-year-old veteran Ivan Ernie Pyle in Escondido on Veterans Day to thank him for his service and deliver a nutritious meal for him and his wife — Pyle, who joined the Air Force in 1951 and remains active in his community, said he is honored to have served.

San Diego County, Cal Fire, and several cities are offering free sandbags to help residents and businesses prepare for heavy rains and possible snow predicted Thursday, Friday and possibly Saturday; officials advise calling ahead at sites such as Escondido's Deer Springs Fire Station — supplies may be limited.
